The designs above are some of my hand drawn croquis. They are my favourite some a as I feel they have more value and and more of a quality that fits in with my client company.

What is Culture Identity?

What is culture?

– A taste in art and manners favoured by a social group

– Knowledge and values in a shared society

– Attitudes and behaviour of a particular group

– Customs and traditions

– Beliefs of a nation

– A language

– To cultivate a culture

– Certain race and religion

What is cultural Identity?

– Being one and not another

– Exact likeness, nature and qualities

– Individual characteristics

– Different from another

All these to consider from the comparison of textile culture from other countries, why does it seem a weak cultural identity for Britain in textiles?

What is our culture? What is mine?

Personal Tutorial

From my personal tutorial and all the lectures I have come up with a few ideas to create a subject base to start on for my dissertation. From all the lectures I took an understanding on the area of ‘the other’. In relation to my course and my general interests in the world and its issues I gathered some links together.

As a textile student it comes naturally to pay attention to textile art by other people from around the world. I love colour and inspirational pieces that relate to my style. My personal love and desire is to travel the world and see it at its best and worst. I have never really had the opportunity to travel the world and have only been able to visit a few places of interest and crave more.

These two aspects combine nicely as I can relate it to ‘the other’. These are the ideas that came to mind:

Why does it seem that other countries and their cultures seem to have more of a cultural identity shown in their textiles and art over britian?

– Is it more important to other countries?

– Are they more proud?

– Is it because its a core skill and quality that country has?

– Is it shown more in LEDCs?

– India compared to Britain

This terms been pretty intense with juggling all the different modules and personal life all in one. I’ve enjoyed my subject area in textiles as I actually chose what I wanted to do this year as for last year it was all very forced and thrown at us. The content of my work has consisted of what I want to do when I’ve completed my degree. Laura Ashley and Cath Kidston are the two companies I have always loved and enjoyed looking at and owning some pieces from both their collections.

The work load has been extremely heavy on top with trying to keep up with constellation work too. I haven’t enjoyed constellation since last year from my first year as I am more of a creative person rather than a academic student. I did miss out on the subject choice for constellation so I ended up with a choice that I didn’t find particularly to my taste. I am finding difficult to get straight into the work set and given for lectures as it doesn’t interest me very much. I think I need to talk to my lecturer about what’s going on as I don’t really know how to move forward in my work, especially when its for my dissertation. I seem to be concentrate more on my subject work as I am prioritising my deadlines first and trying to deal with the stress as best as I can. Hopefully it will be worth it in the end!
